Britain's Most Compelling UFO Enigma
December 1980 • RAF Woodbridge, Suffolk, England
The Rendlesham Forest incident remains the most famous and well-documented Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) encounter in United Kingdom history. Often dubbed "Britain's Roswell," the events occurred over several nights in late December 1980 just outside the perimeter of RAF Woodbridge, a forward NATO base in Suffolk.
Unlike many urban legends, this case is grounded in official military correspondence, including a detailed memorandum from the base's Deputy Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Charles I. Halt.
Early in the morning (approximately 0300L), two USAF security police patrolmen spotted unusual lights outside the back gate of RAF Woodbridge. Suspecting a downed aircraft, three patrolmen were permitted to investigate on foot. They reported a strange, glowing object in the forest with the following characteristics:
The following day, investigators found three depressions in the ground—each 1.5 inches deep and 7 inches in diameter—at the site where the object had been seen.
On the night of December 29, Lt. Col. Halt led a team into the forest to conduct a radiation sweep. They recorded beta/gamma readings of 0.1 milliroentgens, with peak readings concentrated in the three depressions. UK defence radiological experts later noted that these levels were approximately ten times higher than the normal background radiation level (0.01 mR).
Later that night, the team witnessed further phenomena:
The Ministry of Defence (MOD) consistently maintained that the events were of "no defence significance". In various letters to researchers and Members of Parliament, the MOD stated:
While the official military report is sober, the incident has sparked numerous theories, ranging from the mundane to the extraterrestrial:
| Theory | Description |
|---|---|
| The Lighthouse Theory | A popular prosaic explanation suggests the "pulsing lights" were actually the beam from the nearby Orford Ness lighthouse, distorted by the trees. |
| The "Art Wallace" Account | A controversial alternative narrative from an airman (using a pseudonym) describing a staged encounter with movie cameras, alien beings, and underground debriefing facilities. Read the full account → |
| Radar Confiscation | Rumours persist that radar recordings were confiscated by USAF intelligence officers, despite official MOD denials. |
| The "Halt Tape" | Lt. Col. Halt recorded his live reactions and the team's radiation readings on a microcassette as the events unfolded. |
A dramatically different account of the Rendlesham incident exists from Airman "Art Wallace" (pseudonym), describing staged encounters, alien beings, underground facilities, and a "chosen ones" message. This narrative differs significantly from the official record and should be approached with scepticism.

The Rendlesham Forest incident remains a cornerstone of UAP research because it involves multiple credible military witnesses and physical trace evidence. While sceptics point to the lighthouse and astronomical phenomena like fireballs, the disparity between the high-level military report and the "no defence significance" dismissal continues to fuel debate over transparency and the true nature of what happened in the woods that December.
