NOAA's forecast in three-hour blocks, UK time. Grey bars are what's already been observed; coloured bars are the forecast. Yellow means Kp 5 or more (a G1 storm, worth watching from Scotland and the north); red means Kp 7 or more (G3, a chance for the whole of the UK). Forecasts are updated several times a day and are much better at "a storm is coming" than at the exact hour.
Three numbers matter. Kp is a 0 to 9 scale of how disturbed Earth's magnetic field is, averaged over three hours and the whole planet. It tells you how far south the aurora has pushed: the higher the Kp, the further south you can be and still see it. Bz is the north-south direction of the solar wind's magnetic field, and it is the trigger. A strongly southward Bz (a big negative number) opens the door; a northward Bz keeps it shut no matter what the Kp forecast said. Solar wind speed is the energy supply: 300 to 400 km/s is quiet, 500 or more means a coronal hole stream or a coronal mass ejection has arrived.
The catch with the Kp forecast is that it's a prediction of an average. A CME can arrive twelve hours early or late, and a display often comes as a 20-minute substorm inside a three-hour block that looks unremarkable. That's why the live Bz and the AuroraWatch UK alert level (measured by magnetometers in the UK itself) are on the panel above: they tell you what's happening now, not what was expected. If Bz drops below about minus 10 for more than half an hour and AuroraWatch goes amber or red, go outside.
These are rules of thumb for the naked eye under a clear, dark northern horizon. A camera on a tripod, or a phone in night mode, will pick up the aurora about one Kp level earlier than your eyes.
