Northern Lights Alert for 8–9 September 2026: What to Expect

There is a decent chance of the northern lights over Scotland on the nights of Tuesday 8 and Wednesday 9 September 2026, and an outside chance for northern England and Northern Ireland. A cluster of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) left the Sun on 5 and 6 September and should arrive late on Tuesday or early on Wednesday. So here is the honest version: if you live in the north and the sky is clear, it is worth looking. If you live in the south, do not drive anywhere on the strength of this forecast.

Two agencies are watching this, and they do not quite agree on how big it gets. The Met Office space weather team expects G1 (Kp 5) to G2 (Kp 6) storming, with a slight chance of peak G3 (Kp 7), and says aurora will likely be visible from much of Scotland with a chance for northern England and Northern Ireland. NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a more modest G1 watch for 8 September, with a slight chance of G2. Both say confidence is low, for both the arrival time and the strength.

Wednesday night, 9 September, is the better of the two nights. The Met Office puts the greatest chance of significant activity on the 9th, "but could come later on Day 2 (08 Sep)". If the main body of the CME cluster reaches Earth by Tuesday evening, Tuesday night could be live from the moment it gets dark. The sky is properly dark from about 21:30 BST in England and 22:15 BST in northern Scotland, and the Moon is a thin waning crescent that does not rise until after 03:00, so the whole night is dark. Tuesday's weather is a mix of clear spells and showers, windy, with showers spreading in from the north-west overnight, mainly for Argyll. Wednesday turns drier by evening, which is another reason the second night looks better.

The cause is sunspot region AR4524. Over 5 and 6 September it produced at least four CMEs. None came from a big flare. The strongest was a C5.0 on 6 September, a modest event, yet it launched an unusually large "halo" CME, the shape you see when a cloud is heading roughly towards Earth. Several of these clouds are on similar paths, so forecasters expect some to catch each other up and arrive as one combined structure, on top of a fast solar wind stream from a coronal hole that has already reached Earth.

Where in the UK Can You See the Northern Lights?

Your latitude decides most of this. For the G1 to G2 storms that make up most UK alerts, the honest picture looks like this.

Scotland: the best chance by a distance. Caithness, Sutherland, Orkney and Shetland have the strongest odds, and the whole of the Highlands and Aberdeenshire are in play from G1 upwards. From a dark spot outside Edinburgh or Glasgow you can catch a green arc low on the northern horizon at G2, sometimes with faint pillars to the naked eye.

Northern England and Northern Ireland: the realistic southern edge. Northumberland, the Lake District, the North York Moors and the Antrim coast are the places to be at G2. Expect a glow rather than a show, and let a long-exposure phone shot confirm what your eyes half-suspect. Our UK dark sky sites map lists the darkest spots with an open view north.

Wales, the Midlands and southern England: G3 or nothing. A G2 storm rarely produces anything visible this far south. When a storm reaches G3, a camera pointed north from a dark hill can pick up a red or green band on the horizon. G4 and G5 storms, which come a few times per solar cycle, have put the aurora overhead in Cornwall and Kent.

What Time to See the Northern Lights Tonight (UK Times)

Aurora does not run to a schedule. It comes in bursts, called substorms, that can build and fade inside 20 or 30 minutes. The hours from 22:00 to 02:00 are the statistically best window, because that is when the UK is rotated under the auroral oval and the sky is darkest, but a strong burst can come at any time after dark.

Darkness is the real limiter. From late September to March the sky is fully dark by about 20:00 and the window is long. In late May, June and early July the UK never reaches astronomical darkness north of about Manchester, so even a G2 storm is a camera-only event. Check tonight's Moon phase too: a bright Moon washes out a faint arc, while a New Moon leaves the northern horizon properly black.

The practical approach is to have AuroraWatch UK alerts switched on and our UK aurora forecast open, then step outside when the readings jump. Amber means look now from Scotland and northern England. Red means the whole country should step outside.

How to See the Northern Lights: A Realistic Plan

You need three things: a dark spot with a clear view to the north, no Moon, and a clear sky. Get away from streetlights, face north, and give your eyes at least 20 minutes to adjust before you decide there is nothing there.

Know what you are looking for. From most of the UK a G1 or G2 aurora is not the dancing curtain in the photos. It is a pale grey-green band low over the northern horizon that could easily pass for thin cloud. If the band has a sharp lower edge, if it slowly brightens and fades, or if faint vertical rays appear in it, that is aurora. Stars shine through aurora; cloud hides them. Binoculars help: cloud goes fuzzy, aurora stays a smooth glow.

Your phone sees more than you do. Switch to night mode, prop it on a wall or a fence, point it north and take a 5 to 10 second exposure. Green and red that are invisible to the eye show up clearly. Why Aurora Alerts Happen: CMEs, Coronal Holes and Bz

Most UK aurora alerts start with a coronal mass ejection, a cloud of charged particles thrown off the Sun by an erupting sunspot region. If part of the cloud is aimed at Earth it arrives one to three days later and rattles our magnetic field. The bigger and faster the cloud, and the more directly it hits, the stronger the storm. Forecasters grade storms G1 (minor) to G5 (extreme), matching Kp 5 to Kp 9.

The other driver is a coronal hole, a gap in the Sun's outer atmosphere that lets fast solar wind escape. These streams sweep past Earth every 27 days as the Sun rotates, and they produce the smaller, more predictable G1 events. When a CME lands on top of a coronal hole stream, the combined push often nudges a forecast up a level.

The wildcard is Bz, the north-south direction of the magnetic field carried inside the solar wind. When Bz points south it opens a door in Earth's magnetic shield and the aurora switches on. When it points north, even a fast CME can pass with barely a flicker. Bz cannot be forecast in advance. It can only be watched in real time, which is why a forecast written the day before is only ever a "maybe".

Check the verdict at the top of this page, which is updated whenever the Met Office or NOAA issues a storm watch. As a rule of thumb, a G1 storm (Kp 5) gives northern Scotland a chance, a G2 (Kp 6) brings in the rest of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England, and only a G3 or stronger (Kp 7+) reaches the Midlands and southern England. You also need a dark, clear view to the north.
Between about 22:00 and 02:00 local time, once the sky is fully dark and the UK has rotated under the auroral oval. Displays come in bursts of 10 to 30 minutes, so give it at least an hour and keep an AuroraWatch UK alert running rather than watching an empty horizon all night. From late May to mid-July the UK never gets properly dark, so summer alerts are mostly camera-only.

Aurora has a sharp lower edge, brightens and fades over minutes, and may show faint vertical rays. Stars shine through it, whereas cloud hides them. The quickest test is a phone in night mode on a wall: a 5 to 10 second exposure shows green or red in aurora and plain grey in cloud.
For a G1 or G2 storm, yes, or at least to the far north of England or the Antrim coast. Scotland sits closer to the auroral oval, so the same storm that gives Caithness pillars overhead gives Yorkshire a glow on the horizon. G3 and stronger storms, which happen a few times a year near solar maximum, have been photographed from Cornwall, Kent and central London.
Three usual reasons. The CME arrived earlier or later than forecast and the peak fell in daylight. The solar wind's magnetic field (Bz) stayed pointing north, which keeps Earth's shield closed even during a fast stream. Or cloud. Arrival timing for CMEs is often uncertain by 6 to 12 hours, which is why the alert services matter more than any forecast written the day before.
Earth's magnetic field lines up most favourably with the solar wind near the March and September equinoxes, so the same solar activity produces stronger geomagnetic storms then. Combined with the return of long, dark nights, late September through October and late February through March are the best UK aurora windows each year.
